Sherry Bithell, LMSW, is a licensed therapist specializing in substance use disorders, especially as they relate to co-occurring disorders, trauma, grief, and/or family dynamics. The evidence-based treatment modalities she employs with clients include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Based Therapy, and Internal Family Systems.

Sherry worked as a writer and editor for 25 years before deciding to pursue her passion for working with others in a therapeutic context. Since earning her Master of Social Work degree, Sherry has worked with clients in all stages of change in the addiction spectrum; in inpatient and outpatient settings; and with individuals, families, and groups. She also has extensive experience in exploring and helping people manage their anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health diagnoses.

Sherry works closely with her clients to meet their unique needs and diverse circumstances, including addressing the stigma around both addiction and mental health, exploring the beauty of a life in recovery, and working with clients to set and meet short- and long-term goals. She also applies her own lived experiences to meet her clients where they are in their therapeutic journey. Sherry’s clients, in turn, frequently share that they appreciate her collaborative, empathetic, and direct style–with some going as far as noting that they enjoy her sense of humor.

I am the best fit for a client who is ready and willing to focus on themselves, which includes digging deeply into the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors underlying their concerns. I don’t think that “selfish” is a dirty word. And I often assign homework because I expect my clients to work on themselves beyond the length of a therapy session.

I am not a good fit for a client who is unwilling to fully explore the issues that negatively affect their mental health. I’m also a poor fit for a client who won’t allow me to (usually gently!) challenge their beliefs about existing scenarios and who won’t consider alternative approaches to problem-solving. And I’m definitely not good with people who won’t accept that they are smart and brave: smart enough to recognize that they need help and brave enough to ask for it.
